START WITH YOUR NUMBER

How much wedding can you afford? Start with your life, not a national average

An average wedding cost cannot tell you what is comfortable for your household. A more useful budget begins with money genuinely available for the wedding, the time until payments are due, and the priorities you want that money to support.

Define money that is actually available

List savings intentionally set aside for the wedding and any confirmed contributions. Avoid building the plan around hoped-for gifts, bonuses or contributions that have not actually been offered.

Protect normal life first

Wedding spending competes with housing, transportation, debt payments, emergencies and other goals. Keep an emergency cushion outside the wedding budget rather than treating every available dollar as wedding money.

Map the payment timeline

Vendor deposits may be due early while final balances often cluster near the wedding. Look at when the money must be available, not only the final total.

Stress-test the guest count

Take your tentative budget and divide it by the guest count, then price the major guest-driven expenses. If the numbers feel squeezed before you have even added photography, attire and entertainment, the guest count or the plan needs adjustment.

Choose a ceiling before shopping

A spending ceiling gives vendor searches a boundary. It is much easier to compare options when you know the maximum total you intend to commit rather than assembling a dream wedding first and discovering its price afterward.
